“The Port Washington School of Painting stands out from other galleries / schools because it doubles as a fine art gallery and a working studio where lessons are given. The owner, Marsha Tarlow, believes students can be intimidated by formal galleries.
”I feel if you see the artist working at the easel people might be curious. I’m hoping they will come in, chat while, exchange ideas.”
Marsha maintained her own studio for over 30 years before opening a school / studio / gallery. The lessons are limited to five to six students so it is almost one-on-one attention.
It is important for the student / artist to find their own way. Each has their own personal form inside them. They need to find that form, and that is how we teach. It’s not necessary to have an art background. All you need are some supplies, a desire to learn, and a teacher you can relate to.
The school itself is an oasis that offers an atmosphere warmth, friendship and knowledge.”
What We show in the Studio
The school shows work of emerging artists as well as those already established. It is the intention to give local artisans and painters a place to exhibit and sell their work.
